Who was Monster Kody?

Sanyika Shakur – aka Monster Kody – was born as Kody Dejohn Scott in Los Angeles, California USA, on 13 November 1963 – his zodiac sign was Scorpio, and he held American nationality. He was an author and gangster, a member of the street gang Eight Tray Gangster Crips from Los Angeles; Sanyika received his nickname Monster Kody when he was only 13 years old, after he beat a man during a robbery, and left his face disfigured.

Early life

Monster Kody was raised in Los Angeles alongside his three brothers and two sisters, by their father Ernest Scott and mother Birdie Canada. Not a lot is known about his parents’ professions, as Monster Kody respected their privacy, while it’s known that his mother was unfaithful to his father, and he believed that his biological father was actually American Football Player Richard Lee Bass; because Ernest knew of Birdie’s adultery, he physically abused her while Monster Kody was growing up. Monster Kody also believed that he was Richard’s son because Ernest both emotionally and physically abused him, and often left him behind while taking his other five children out for dinner and on family trips.

Monster Kody’s parents divorced when he was six years old, and Ernest continued to express his contempt for him when visiting the family on weekends. Birdie moved with her children to a dangerous neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles in 1972, and Monster Kody revealed that he was introduced to gangs when he was just 10 years old, after he was robbed by two 13 year old boys. Not long after this, he began spending time with Stanley Tookie Williams, leader of the gang West Side Crips; Stanley wrote about Monster Kody in his memoir “Blue Rage, Black Redemption”, revealing that he often smoked PCP, and lifted weights with him and his gang.

Becoming a gang member

A member of West Side Crips formed the sub-gang Eight Tray Gangster Crips in 1975, and Monster Kody was initiated on 15 June 1975, on the very day that he completed sixth grade. Following this, he and other gang members stole a car and attacked around 15 members of the Brims Street gang who had been spotted in the Crips’ neighborhood; Monster Kody used all the eight rounds of his 12-gauge shotgun, shooting a couple of gang members.

Violent attack on an elderly man

Monster Kody was mentored by Tray Ball after he had joined the Eight Tray Gangster Crips, and in 1977 when he was only 13 years old, the two tried to rob an elderly African-American man who was passing through their neighborhood. The man punched Monster Kody in the face, which then led to him beating the man for 20 straight minutes, leaving him in a coma, while his face became permanently disfigured. Another member of the gang overheard the police calling the beater ‘a monster’, which was how Monster Kody received his nickname.

Problems with the authorities

In 1978, Monster Kody shot an employee at a fast food restaurant after he had assaulted his younger brother Kershaun; he spent a week in jail, and was then re-arrested, this time wrongfully, after he was accused of shooting an Inglewood Family Bloods member.

On 14 February 1979, Monster Kody was sentenced to spend nine months behind bars on assault and grand theft auto charges, which he served at Camp Munz.

While he was in jail, on 9 August 1979, the founder of the Crips, Raymond Washington was murdered, and it was believed by the Hoover Crips, which started a war between the Hoovers and the East Side Crips.

Monster Kody was 16 years old when he was shot six times by three members of the gang Rollin’ 60’s on 31 December 1980; it’s said that he only managed to survive because of the wine he had drunk and the drugs which he had taken the same night, as these prevented shock. He spent several weeks recovering in hospital, during which those who had shot him returned to kill him, however, a nurse ended up saving his life. Monster Kody’s brother Kershaun retaliated on 31 December 1981, shooting two teenagers at a party in the Rollin’ 60’s neighborhood, and shot and killed another later that day; he then spent five years at California Youth Authority for the murder.

Monster Kody spent the ’80s in and out of jail, and it was during these years that he became friends with several members of the Republic of New Afrika, who educated him about many things; he then changed his name to Sanyika Shakur, and began treating black people with respect.

He was arrested in January 1991, after having beaten up a crack dealer who was actually working for the police. In May 1993, he published his memoir “Monster: The Autobiography of an L. A. Gang Member”.

Monster Kody befriended the late American rapper Tupac Amaru Shakur in the first half of the ‘90s – Tupac was murdered on 13 September 1996, allegedly by the South Side Compton Crips.

Monster Kody was arrested in March 2007, for beating his acquaintance and trying to steal his car, and in May 2008 was sentenced to spend six years in prison; he published his second book “T. H. U. G.  L. I. F. E.” in 2008, before his release from jail in August 2012. Monster Kody published his third book “Stand up, Struggle Forward: New Afrikan Revolutionary Writings on Nation, Class, and Patriarchy” in November 2013.

Following his release from prison in 1988, the two married in a private ceremony, with only their best man and maid of honor attending; although not a lot else is known about their marriage, it’s believed that Monster Kody and Tamu remained married until his death.
