Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was born on 21 February 1946, in London, England, the son of Margaret Doreen Rose and Bernard William Rickman, a Second World War aircraft fitter, house painter, and decorator.
He had three siblings, brothers David and Michael and a sister named Sheila. His father passed away when Alan was eight years old, and with his siblings and mother moved to an Acton estate to the west of Wormwood Scrubs Prison. His mother had a tough time raising four children, and working for the Post Office.
He attended Latymer Upper School, where he became interested in acting, then after matriculating, he enrolled at Chelsea College of Art and Design, and continued his education at the Royal College of Art from 1968 to 1970.
