Who is Sonya Nicole Hamlin?

Sonya Nicole Hamlin was born in the USA in 1974 – her exact date of birth remains undisclosed, but her zodiac sign is believed to be Sagittarius, and she holds American nationality. She’s a real estate lawyer, but who’s probably known best for being the former wife of Idris Elba.

Why did they divorce?

Idris and Sonya met in 2005 when they were introduced by a mutual friend, and started dating a couple of days later; after a month, the two moved in together, in Idris’ house in Maryland. They married on 9 April 2006, in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada, attended by only the real estate agent Daniel Krastev.

After only four months, Sonya tried to file for divorce, claiming that Idris had become popular, and no longer wanted to be married; the state law requires two people to be married for at least a year before they can file for divorce, and Sonya’s request was thus rejected. She then hired a lawyer who claimed that Sonya was drunk when she and Idris exchanged vows, and the marriage was thus annulled.

Sonya then explained that she was still in love with Idris, but that his friends kept telling him that marriage will only slow down his career, and that it was visible that he no longer wanted to be with her; she hasn’t spoken of any other men whom she has been with since their divorce.

Prior to meeting Sonya, from 1999 to 2003, Idris was married to Hanne ‘Kim’ Nørgaard, a make-up artist and a businesswoman, who gave birth to their daughter Isan Elba in 2002. Sometime in the first half of the 2010s, Idris was in a relationship with Naiyana Garth, and she gave birth to their son Winston Elba in 2014. He began dating the Somali-Canadian model Sabrine Dhowre in 2017, and they married on 26 April 2019, in a private ceremony in Marrakesh.
