Known professionally by his stage name Johnny Knoxville, he was born as Philip John Clapp on 11 March 1971 under the zodiac sign of Pisces, in Knoxville, Tennessee USA. He was raised by his father, Philip Clapp, who worked as a tire/car salesman, and his mother, Lemoyne Clapp, who was a teacher at a Sunday school. He has two elder sisters, one of whom is named Lynne Clapp. He attended South-Young High School from which he matriculated in 1989, then moved to California to pursue his career as an actor.

Unable to land a breakthrough role, he started creating his own opportunities by pitching article ideas to magazines.
