He was raised in Dallas solely by his mother Jonetta Patton, as his father Usher Raymond III abandoned the family when Usher was only one; his mother remarried and gave birth to Usher’s half-brother James Lackey in 1984. He was nine when he joined the church choir, and fell in love with music; the family eventually moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Usher studied at North Springs High School.
Usher’s debut self-titled album was released in 1994 when he was only 15 years old; while the album didn’t achieve widespread commercial success, it laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the music industry.
It wasn’t until his second album “My Way”, released in 1997, that Usher truly made his mark. The album was a massive success, mostly thanks to hit singles “You Make Me Wanna…” and “Nice & Slow”; “Usher” went on to sell more than six million copies in the US, earning him widespread recognition and acclaim.
The year 2001 saw the release of Usher’s third studio album “8701”; it continued his upward trajectory with chart-topping hits “U Remind Me” and “U Got It Bad”.
In 2004, Usher released his fourth album “Confessions”, which is widely believed to be his most iconic and commercially successful album to date; it not only showcased Usher’s vocal capabilities but also delved into personal themes, addressing topics such as love, infidelity and relationships. The title track “Confessions Part II” became a cultural phenomenon, and the album went on to sell more than 10 million copies in only its first year; it remains one of the best-selling R&B albums of all time, and earned Usher numerous awards, including three Grammies.
Following the success of “Confessions”, Usher continued to evolve as an artist with the release of his fifth album “Here I Stand” in 2008, which marked a departure from the confessional tone of its predecessors, focusing on themes of love and commitment. While not as commercially successful as “Confessions”, “Here I Stand” still produced notable hits such as “Love in This Club” and “Trading Places.”
In 2010, Usher returned with his sixth album “Raymond v. Raymond”, which showcased his versatility as an artist, as it was a mix of R&B, pop and dance songs, spawning hit singles such as “OMG” featuring will.i.am and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” featuring Pitbull.
Usher’s two subsequent albums, the 2012 “Looking 4 Myself” and the 2016 “Hard II Love”, continued to demonstrate his artistic range and ability to experiment with different genres.
He’s currently working on his 9th studio album “Coming Home”, set to be released on 9 February 2024.
