During his time, Cash and Vivian exchanged hundreds of letters, and on his return to the US in 1954, the two married at St, Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in San Antonio.
Following her parents’ divorce, Tara lived with her mother and her new husband, Dick Distin, a police officer, in Ventura, California,. She also spent time with her father during his summer tours, and at his home on Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Vivian died in 2005 from complications of lung cancer surgery, and Tara’s father passed away in 2003 of complications from diabetes.

John R. Cash was born on 26 February 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, USA, one of seven children of Ray Cash and Carrie Cloveree. At the age of three, the family moved to Dyess, Arkansas, a colony established for low-income families to work on the land that would later become their property. From the age of five, Johnny started working in the cotton fields, and would sing in the field to entertain his family.
His interest in music increased, and at just 12 years old, he began writing his own songs. He was taught to play guitar, and while in high school sang on a local radio station.
He joined the US Air Force on 7 July 1950 and was sent to the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile of the US Air Force Security Service at Landsberg, West Germany, serving as a Morse code operator intercepting Soviet Army transmissions. Four years after joining the military, he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
He then studied to become a radio announcer while living with Vivian in Memphis, Tennessee, and performed with Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant. He impressed legendary record producer Sam Phillips with his rockabilly style songs, and his first recordings, “Hey Porter” and “Cry! Cry! Cry!”, were made in late June of 1955.
