Medlocke was also raised by his grandparents, growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. His grandfather Shorty Medlocke was a well-known blues musician, and thanks to him, Rickey learned how to play the banjo. He started performing at a young age, and would slowly improve his musical abilities, so at the age of five, he was already learning how to play the guitar and three years later he started playing the drums. He continued learning various other musical instruments over the next few years including keyboards, mandolin, and dobro, also teaching himself how to sing at the same time. After matriculating from high school, he decided to form the band Blackfoot, of which he was the lead guitarist and lead vocalist.

During the 1970s, Rickey performed with Lynyrd Skynrd as a session musician, as a drummer and/or lead singer; some of the songs he performed during this time include “White Dove”, “Preacher’s Daughter” and “One More Time”. While playing drums, he had a desire to play guitar once again which led to the reforming of Blackfoot – the band would start recording songs that included the hit “Train, Train”, and the “Highway Song” which was written by Medlocke and Jakson Spires. His net worth would start increasing at this point, however the group would eventually disband in the early 1990s.

Medlocke considered pursuing other careers, but then received a phone call from Gary Rossington, inviting him to become the lead guitarist and songwriter for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He returned to the band, playing a lot of their older songs such as “Free Bird” and “Workin’ For MCA”.

Since then, he’s been a member of the band, but would at times work with other musicians such as Shooter Jennings and Blackberry Smoke. To date, Lynyrd Skynyrd has sold around 40 million albums worldwide and Medlocke has gained an increase in net worth thanks to their success. He also joined “American Idol” finalist Bo Bice in performing “Sweet Home Alabama” during the show’s fourth season. His latest performances have included with Blackfoot at three separate shows in the United States.

In 2008, Rickey was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame, and in 2015, He received a Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s tried his hand at an acting career too, appearing in “Groom Lake”. He has also appeared in numerous television and radio commercials.

For his personal life, it is known that Medlocke is married to Stacy Michelle, having previously apparently been married twice, in the 1980s and then very briefly a few years later. He mainly uses two Gibson guitars, a Gibson Explorer and a Gibson Les Paul.
