Rafael Amaya moved with his family to Tecate, Baja California when he was five. He was excellent in sports when a kid, but took theater and music classes as a teenager. Soon after matriculating from high school, Amaya went to San Diego University, but later Rafael returned to Mexico to join the band called “Almalafa”, and they moved together to Mexico City. He stayed there, and started his career as a model.
The Centre for Arts Education Televisa spotted Rafael and offered him an opportunity to appear in the TV series “La Casa En La Playa” in 2000, which he accepted and so launched his acting career. He continued to appear in episodes of the soap opera, and got his first bigger role in “Las Vías del Amor” (2002), starring Aracely Arámbula, Jorge Salinas, and Enrique Rocha. His debut on film came in 2004 when he starred in the romance “Desnudos” with Karyme Lozano and Juan Vidal, even performing a frontal nude scene in this movie. Two more films followed: “Así del precipicio” (2006), directed by Teresa Suarez, and “Amor letra por letra” (2008), starring Silvia Navarro, Alan Estrada, and Octavio Ocaña. These early roles increased his net worth, but he would become more popular in the coming years.
Amaya starred in the horror movie “24 Cuadros de Terror” in 2008, and had a bigger part in the TV series “Sexo Y Otros Secretos”, also in 2008, appearing in 12 episodes. The films “Pepe & Santo vs. America” (2009), and “Rock Marí” (2010) followed, but Amaya’s popularity rose further from 2010, when he was cast in several hit TV series such as “Alguien Te Mira” (2010-2011), “Hospital Central” (2011), “La Reina del Sur” (2011), and “Doctor Mateo” (2011). All added significantly to his net worth.
However, Amaya earned most of his money thanks to the crime-drama series “El Señor de los Cielos” that has been running since 2013. He has appeared in more than 300 episodes which have generated a lot of cash into his bank account. Most recently, Amaya starred in “Cantinflas” (2014), with Óscar Jaenada, Michael Imperioli, and Ilse Salas, and “Oro y Polvo” (2015), directed by Felix Limardo.
Regarding his personal life, Rafael Amaya was in a relationship with actress Ana Layevska, and dated actress Angelica Celaya for five years before getting engaged, but the wedding was called off in 2015, and they broke up amid rumors that Angelica cheated on him with her co-star, Matt Ryan.
