In the interview with New Yorker, Peter disclosed: ‘Since I have a foot in both worlds, an artist can play me three tracks, and I can go, ‘This one only hip-hop heads like me will appreciate. This one could be big, but it’s corny. But this one could reach a lot of people, without you sacrificing who you are’. During the same year, he began hosting the game show “Hip Hop Squares”, which is executively produced by Ice Cube; the series ran for five seasons, and was canceled in 2019.

Beef with Nicki Minaj

In 2012, he said on the stage of the Hot 970’s Summer Jam Concert that Nicki Minaj’s new single “Star Ships” was not real hip-hop, which didn’t sit well with Nicky, as she later canceled her performance at the concert. Initially, Peter refused to apologize for his comments, claiming that he was not bashing Nicki or her artistry – it was just a comment about her soundtrack, which in his opinion was not inherently rap music. In 2013, he set the record straight with Nicki in an episode of Hot 97’s show, saiing: “I am sorry the things went as left as they did. I never had any ill feeling about you as a human being and I never would have dissed you in any personal way ever beyond my sort of distaste for that song”.
