Pacquita has become a feminist icon in Mexico, and has proven extremely popular with female audiences. In 1970, she moved to Mexico City with her sister to begin singing. Initially, they worked together, forming a duo called “Las Golondrinas” (“The Swallows”). She quickly rose to prominence, although not necessarily of a mainstream variety, with songs that skewered macho culture, and celebrated female empowerment.
