From when he was six years old, Mike started competing, and soon won a National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. For the next ten years he won the Amateur National Championship every year, so tying James Stewart Jr.’s record with 11 titles.
Mike’s professional career started in 2004, racing for the Varner Motorsports on a Honda. However, his debut didn’t go as planned, as he finished 30th overall. Nevertheless, he bounced back in his second race, taking third position behind Ricky Carmichael and Kevin Windham at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pennsylvania.
The following year he sat out the 2005 Supercross season, as he wanted to prepare himself for the 125cc class. In 2006 he proved that he could become one of the best motorcyclists, as he finished fourth overall in the West Region championship, and second overall in Motocross Lites National Championship. The next year, Mike decided to compete in the 450/Premier Class, and in his rookie season reached second place at the end of the championship, with six podium finishes over the season’s course. His next move was the Supercross championship, however, due to a crash during practice in San Diego, Mike broke his collarbone, and his season was over.
He then started preparing for the 2008 AMA Motorcross Championship, however, the result was even worse, as he had a severe crash in which he broke both shoulder blades, and a rib, while also suffering severe concussion and bruising to a lung; he still finished the season as the 10th overall. Mike continued with crashes, breaking his tibia and fibula in September 2008, however he competed in the entire 2009 Supercross season, finishing in 9th place. From 2010, Mike’s form began to improve, however, his best result stayed 2nd place in 2012 in AMA Motocross National, while in Supercross he finished sixth in 2012, which is his best result. Since 2011 he has been riding for MotoConcepts, with his brother Jeff Alessi and Vince Friese.
Back in 2013 he was fined $10,000, after his brother, Jeff Alessi pointed a distracting green laser at other racers while at the starting gate of the Washougal National.
