Crabtree attended David W. Carter High School where, in addition to football with the Carter Cowboys, he played basketball, and ran track. His basketball game was in fact so good that he could have chosen the sport over football. He was offered scholarships to several universities as a result of his sporting prowess, including Texas A&M, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Oklahoma, amongst others.

He decided on a place at Texas Tech, where he played for the Red Raiders from 2006 – 2008. He quickly rose to become the team’s top wide receiver, in his debut game scoring three touchdowns. In just two seasons, he managed to set eight NCAA records, including but not limited to “Most touchdown passes caught by a freshman”, “Most yards gained by a freshman”, and “Most passes caught by a freshman, season”. The University honoured his great achievements by creating a mural of Crabtree in their football stadium.

Crabtree was drafted in 2009 to the 49ers, under a six year contract reportedly worth $32 million, though his signing was notoriously difficult. The New York Jets filed charges against the 49ers for interefering with their negotiations with Crabtree. Crabtree failed to show up to his first training session due to a failure to complete contract negotiations with the team, and was the very last player of the season to sign. His first game was against the Houston Texans. In the February of that year, he injured himself during training, fracturing his left foot, and forced to undergo surgery having a screw placed in his foot, resulting in him being off the field for over two months. In 2013, he underwent further surgery, for a torn Achilles tendon.

Crabtree left the 49ers in April 2015, to move to the Oakland Raiders for a one year, $3.2 million contract, with $1.8 million available in training incentives. This was later extended for four years, for $35 million. His successful sporting career and shroud financial negotiations have helped to amass his large fortune.

Over the course of his career, Crabtree ran 6253 yards, 4327 of which were with the SF49ers. He has scored a total of 43 touchdowns.

Outside of his sporting achievements, Crabtree has worked with the video game company Ubisoft, as part of a promotion for “The Hip Hop Dance Experience”. Whenever Crabtree would perform his dance – “The Crab Shake” – on the football field, the company would donate money to “The Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco”. He has also been involved in promotions for Subway, the sandwich chain.

In his personal life, Crabtree has kept himself quite quiet, and details of his relationships are not widely available. He has expressed an interest in fashion.
