Harvey attended Fitch Senior High School, where he would play baseball. He was named the top prospect in the 2007 MLB draft after achieving numerous honors. Despite this he was only drafted during the third round, by the Los Angeles Angels. He then opted to go to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and play with the Tar Heels.

While playing in college he would go on and set a record of 22-7 for his entire collegiate career. He continued to play during the summer to improve his mechanics and flexibility. He eventually improved and this earned him the opportunity to be picked seventh overall by the New York Mets in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

As normal with rookie baseballers, he first played In the minor leagues, with the single-A St. Lucie Mets and the Double-A Binghamton Mets. He would go on and get a record of 8-2 with St. Lucie and would then be promoted, and achieve a 5-3 record with Binghamton and became the Mets second best prospect in 2012. He then became a part of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, and was eventually promoted to fifth starter replacing the injured Johan Santana.

During his pitching debut he set a record for strikeouts, and became the first modern baseball player to strike out 10 or more batters while conceding just two hits in a major league debut. He posted impressive pitching and batting records despite losses in his next games, as he had a lot more opportunities to pitch, but management decided to end his season run with a 3-5 record. He returned in 2013 with improvements to both his control and arm strength, and his season performance earned him the title of “the best Mets pitcher to ever wear the uniform”. After retiring the first 20 Chicago White Sox batters on an almost perfect game, he was featured by Sports Illustrated with the nickname “The Dark Knight of Gotham”. After the 2013 MLB All-Star Game, he would suffer an ulnar collateral ligament tear which would require Tommy John Surgery, and was placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season.

Despite a great recovery after the surgery, the Mets decided not to put Harvey back on the roster in 2014 since they had a losing season anyway. They did not want to risk Harvey’s health and decided that he would return during the start of the 2015 season. During his return, he performed spectacularly and even prompted Pedro Martinez to say that Matt could have a better career than him. His agent put in concerns that his health might be in danger because of the demands the Mets are putting on Matt. Despite this, he still played in the NLDS and would go on and help the team in the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs. However, they would lose, and perhaps unsurprisingly in 2016 Harvey was out for most of the season because of an injury.

For his personal life, it is known that Harvey has a very notorious profile with the media, showcasing a flashy lifestyle. He dates models, is often showcased in gossip columns, and owns a Maserati. He dated Anne Vyalitsyna in 2013 and it lasted for a year. In 2015, he began dating model Ania Cywinska.
