Mariano grew up in Leon, as his father was transferred there, serving as a jurist. Mariano attended the Jesuit school for ten years, and later enrolled in the high school in Vigo, after which he enrolled at the University of Santiago de Compostela, from which he graduated with a law degree, and immediately decided to enter the competitive examination which he needed to pass in order to work in the Spanish civil service. Mariano passed the test, and by that, became the youngest-ever property register, at only 23 years old.

Mariano quickly assumed the position Padron of Villafranca del Bierzo (Leon) and Santa Pola (Alicante). The same year, Mariano was involved in a traffic accident which left his face scarred, and ever since he has been wearing beard to cover those scars.

However, his political career began in 1981, when he joined the People`s Alliance, and immediately was elected the position of deputy in the inaugural legislature of the Galician Parliament. Next year, Mariano moved a position higher, becoming the Minister of Institutional Relations of the Xunta De Galicia. He held that position for four years, and in 1986 he became the President of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, remaining until 1991.

In 1989 People`s Alliance became the People`s Party, and led by Manuel Farga, Mariano became a member of the National Executive Committee and delegate for Pontevedra. The same year, Mariano became deputy secretary general of the party, and in 1993, he was elected once again to that position.

In 1996, Brey became the Minister of Public Administration, after his party entered the government with Basque Nationalist Party, Canarian Coalition, and Convergence and Union.
However, in 1999 he assumed the position of Minster of Education and Culture, further increasing his potential net worth.

The next year, in elections the People`s Party won the majority of votes, and Mariano was appointed as Senior Vice-President of Government and Minister of the Presidency, serving until 2004, when 2004, Rajoy became the Chairman of the People`s Party, after Jose Maria Aznar decided to retire from politics.

Rajoy`s political success was pushed back by the Madrid bombing and the government’s false accusations of ETA for those attacks. His party lost government to the José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero – led Spanish Socialists Workers` Party, and for seven years they were an opposition.

Nevertheless, in the 2011 elections, his party won 186 of 350 seats in Parliament, the biggest majority since the 1970s, and Mariano assumed the position of Prime Minister on the 21st December 2011, after he was elected by the Congress of Deputies, making it the main source of his net worth. However, following financial crises in recent years, and Catalonia’s push for a form of independence from Spain, in December 2015 elections, Brey lost his parliamentary majority, and as of early 2016 the future Spanish government is yet to be determined.

Thanks to his successful career in politics, Mariano has earned numerous prestigious awards, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III in 2003, and Order of the Republic Of Serbia in 2013.

When it comes to his personal life, Mariano has been married to Elvira Fernandez Balboa since 28th December 1996; the couple has two children.
