Washington’s 1991 hit single “Kissing You”, from his debut album “Make Time for Love”, was written during his time signed with the Qwest label. Released on the 13th of July, the song won “Best R&B Vocal Performance” at the Grammys, and reached number 40 in the “Hot 100” charts. It stayed in that position for 13 weeks, whilst also reaching the number one spot on the R&B charts. The song featured on an episode of the TV soap “General Hospital”, a show on which Washington would later feature as an actor. The album “Make Time for Love” reached gold status with the subsequent releases of “When You Love Somebody”, and a single of the same name as the album.
In the same year, Washington recorded a single with Australian pop star, Kylie Minogue, called “If You Were with Me Now”, which boosted his profile in Great Britain, when the song reached number four in the UK Singles chart.
After his chart successes, Washington branched into acting. He appeared in “General Hospital” as the character of Keith Jasper, and in the show “Poetic Justice”, in 1993, as Dexter. He also appeared as himself on the show “Martin”, a sitcom starring Martin Lawrence.
Also in 1993, Washington released his second LP, “You Make It Easy”. After a long hiatus from music, he returned in 2008 with the album “KW”, this time working under the MCA/Universal Label. A single, “Bring It On”, was released on the 18th of April. It reached number 63 in the “Hot 100” music chart.
Washington now works in radio, hosting on WDMK-FM, based in his hometown of Detroit. His show is called “Kisses After Dark”. He has musical credits up until 2014, when he appeared as a guest on the album “Icon” with artist Chante Moore. Other albums on which he has appeared include “Promise”, in 2008, with Alex Lattimore, “The Good Life”, in 2001, with Viva Beat, and “Blues Binge”, in 2001, with Reggie Wayne Morris, amongst others. His various appearances have all added to his wealth, and his current net worth of $500 thousand. Recently, he has appeared in stage plays, including in “My Brother Marvin”, in 2013, telling the story of Marvin Gaye, and in “Torn Between 2 Fathers”, with Angela Winbush, in 2015. He also still sometimes puts on live musical performances.
In his personal life, Washington has been married twice. His first marriage, to Marsha Jenkins, ended in divorce. She went on to write a fictionalised account of their relationship, a book called “The Other Side of Through”, released in 1998, in which she detailed his unfaithfulness. Washington married his long-term girlfriend Stephanie Grimes in 2009, a manager at WGPR-FM radio station. He has stated plans to release further music in the future, expressing his dissatisfaction with the current state of R&B.
