Born Josephine Victoria Behar on 7 October 1942, in New York City USA, she’s the only daughter of Gino Occhiuto, a truck driver for Coca-Cola, and his wife Rose, a seamstress.
After high school, Steve’s wife enrolled at Queens College, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1964, while in 1966 she obtained an MA in English education from Stony Brook University.
Before launching a career in the entertainment industry, Joy taught English on Long Island at Lindenhurst Senior High School in Lindenhurst, from the late ‘60s until the early ‘70s.
Her career in show business began in the early ‘80s as a receptionist, and later as a producer of the show “Good Morning America”. Her first on-screen appearance was in “The New Show” in 1984, created by Lorne Michaels but which was short-lived.
Three years later, she was the host of the variety talk show “Way Off Broadway”, alongside Larry David as a writer and performer. To speak further of her early accomplishments, she was the host of the show “Live from Queens”, and was a regular in the show “Baby Boom”.

As her career as a TV host expanded, she forewent her acting career, but occasionally appeared in various TV series, including as herself in the TV series “Spin City” in 2000, and the TV series “Bette” the following year.
