After a year of basketball in high school, John Starks attended four different universities in four years, transferring after committing petty offences. After graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1988, he was passed over for the NBA draft despite a respectable average of 15.4 points per game. Nevertheless, he got the access to the League floor, signing as a free agent for the Golden State Warriors in September, 1988. In his first season, he participated in 36 games averaging 4.1 points.
