He first enrolled at college in Senotobia, Mississippi, but then attended Delta State University in Cleveland, before actually graduating from Mississippi State University in 1977 with a BS degree in accounting. He later graduated in 1981 with a JD degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law with his main interest in general civil litigation.

Before his rise to fame as an author, Grisham worked a variety of jobs, including a salesclerk, a plumbing contractor and others. Grisham subsequently practised law ten years, and was also elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1984-90. Both of these sub-careers profited his net worth, however, Grisham’s job as a lawyer came to a halt in 1991, with the successful release of the novel “The Firm”.
