Joe attended Christian Brothers College High School, located in St. Louis, Missouri, where he started playing ice hockey. During his high school years, Joe won three state championships, and was a part of the team that didn’t lose a single game in two seasons. Furthermore, Joe played for the St. Louis Jr. Blues that compete in the Central States Hockey League, and Sioux Falls Stampede, which is a part of the United States Hockey League.
In 2005 he entered the NHL Entry Draft and was selected as the 195th pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, he didn’t play for the Penguins until 2009, at instead enrolling Northeastern University, where he played for the Huskies men’s ice hockey team. While there, he received several awards, including the Hockey East Rookie of the Week in February, and was also the recipient of Northeastern’s Ed Arrington Memorial Rookie of the Year Award. In four seasons he played for the Huskies, Joe scored 34 goals with 60 assists.
In 2009 he signed his first professional contract with the Penguins, but played in their affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL until 2010-2011 season. In his first season with the Penguins, Joe played in nine games and managed to score one goal and provide one assist. He played for the Penguins until 2013-2014, which was his best season in the NHL so far; he featured in 53 games and scored only one goal, but compensated his lack of goal scoring ability with 13 assists.
