Iman Asante Shumpert was born on the 26th June 1990, in Berlin, Illinois, USA of African and American ancestry. He is best known as a professional basketball player, who played for the New York Knicks and currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also recognized as a hip-hop artist. His professional basketball career has been active since 2011.

Iman Shumpert spent his childhood with three brothers in Chicago, the son of Odis, who works as an insurance broker, and L’Tanya, a professor of art and design at Columbia College. He started playing basketball while attending Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park, Illinois. Later, he continued to play at Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he excelled and became a first team All-State player. He led his high school team to three conference titles, and received the MVP trophy as junior and as well as senior. After high school, Iman enrolled at Georgia Tech University, where he continued to develop his basketball skills. During the 2010-2011 season, Shumpert was the best player on his team, averaging 17.3 points per game, and was also the leader in assists and rebounds. Following the season`s end, Iman was named to the All-ACC second team, and was also a part of the ACC all-defensive team.
He forwent his final year of studies, and entered the 2011 NBA Draft, in which he was selected as the 17th overall pick by the New York Knicks, which marked the beginning of his professional career as a basketball player.
