What is “Selling Sunset”?

The Netflix reality series “Selling Sunset” was created by Adam DiVello, and follows the comings and goings at the Oppenheim Group, a high-end real estate brokerage firm based in Newport Beach and West Hollywood, as well as the personal and professional lives of the agents that work there. The series premiered in March 2019 and is currently on its fifth season, with over 45 episodes as of December 2022.

The main cast members who have been present since season one are Heather El Moussa, Mary Fitzgerald, Brett and Jason Oppenheim, and Chrishell Stause. Other series regulars are Davinia Potratz, Amanza Smith, Emma Hernan, Vanessa Villela, Romain Bonnet and Chelsea Lazkani. Naturally, the glamorous show is rife with drama and scandal, just to maintain the interest of viewers.

So reading upwards from the still not inconsiderable wealth of these participants –

  1. Romain Bonnet – $500,000

As real estate agents who sell beautiful homes to the uber-rich, it’s little surprise that several cast members of “Selling Sunset” are millionaires themselves.

Romain Bonnet, a French native in his mid-20s, is still well on his way to becoming a millionaire, despite coming in at the bottom of the list. The glamorous agent has been married to Mary Fitzgerald for quite some time, but that hasn’t stopped him from stealing the hearts of thousands of fans. The cultured Frenchman studied at a private school in his home country and graduated with an arts degree before moving to the US to pursue a modelling career.

Almost immediately, Romain was signed to the Wilhelmina agencies in Los Angeles and New York, modelling for big brands such as Celeste Bright and Tommy Hackett. In October 2019, People magazine exclusively covered Romain and Mary’s tasteful wedding, which was also documented in season two of “Selling Sunset”.

The tattooed fitness enthusiast hasn’t revealed many details about his relationship and marriage with Mary, but we do know that they began dating just two days after he arrived in Los Angeles. Romain is something of a jack of all trades, as he’s also worked as a pastry chef and in the construction industry. These days, he is a project manager for The Oppenheim Group. When not busy filming, you can find the brown-eyed European selling personalized shout-outs on Cameo, or promoting small businesses on his thriving social media accounts.

  1. Chelsea Lazkani – $500,000

Chelsea Lazkani, who joined the show in its fifth season, was born in London in the early 1980s to Nigerian immigrant parents, and grew up in a squalid council flat where she had to share a room with her two younger siblings. Proving to be much more than just a pretty face, Chelsea has an undergraduate degree in economics, and a masters degree in gas and oil economics.

Before moving to the US, Chelsea worked as a solar analyst and business strategist. In 2015, she settled down permanently in Los Angeles, attracted by its fabulous weather and career opportunities. In the first year of working as an agent for Rodeo Realty Inc, Chelsea oversaw the sales of properties worth a combined $10 million – little did the real estate mogul know that she would meet her future husband shortly afterwards, and be introduced to the Oppenheim Group.

Chelsea’s parents have equally impressive backgrounds – in 2019, her mother, Elizabeth Adefioye, was named one of the Most Powerful Women in Corporate America by Black Enterprise. Elizabeth also snagged a coveted spot in the 2021 Elite 100 Extraordinary Black Women list, and has used her voice and influence to address systematic racism in the workplace. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s father Segun, is a renowned developer and architect, who inspired her love for property.

Despite enjoying a comfortable lifestyle in her adult years, Chelsea has never forgotten her roots. When the Adefioye family moved to the UK, Segun had just $16 to his name and Elizabeth worked a lowly supermarket job. As for her husband, Jeff Lazkani was born in 1982 and currently works as a managing partner for the marketing agency Icon Media Direct.

Rumors of Amanza abandoning the show began circulating online when fans noticed that she was absent at the season five reunion. However, Amanza later explained that she missed out on the reunion due to testing positive for COVID-19. Despite being offered the chance to appear virtually, she turned it down when feeling under the weather.

Despite her laidback reputation, Mary held Christine to account when the latter didn’t keep in touch while travelling with her then-fiancé Christian, and things between the duo only worsened when Mary discovered that Christine had become engaged and hadn’t told her. After weeks of tension, the pair made up at Christine’s bridal gown fitting, but the relationship between the two is currently non-existent…. Apparently….

If Heather looks familiar to some fans, it’s because she enjoyed a lengthy modelling career before becoming a reality star. She was Playboy magazine’s Miss February in 2010 and has posed for the magazine on various occasions. The former Playmate isn’t ashamed of her risqué past or nude shots, and has said: “If I hadn’t posed for Playboy, I wouldn’t have met the people who led me to where I am now.” Previously, she also worked as a Pilates instructor.

The college graduate studied art and entertainment at the Centro de Educación Artística de Televisa and is a great fan of the outdoors, frequently posting beautiful nature snaps on her Instagram. Despite her reputation for being a drama queen, Vanessa has so far got on well with the other cast members, although one of the newbies in “Selling Sunset”.

Born in Draffenville, Kentucky, in July 1981, Terrina Chrishell Stause was also a well-known actress before pursuing a lucrative real estate career. She received her BA in theater from Murray State University and is multiracial thanks to her half-Japanese and half-Spanish biological father, whom her mother broke up from before discovering that she was pregnant.

Chrishell’s mother and stepfather struggled with addiction, and so their mental health, and Chrishell was forced to miss a year of middle school as a consequence. During that time, the family apparently lived in a tent; Chrishell survived on food stamps, washed her hair in a nearby river, and had to keep up appearances so her classmates wouldn’t discover the truth. However, the TV star landed her first recurring role as Amanda Dillon in “Days of Our Lives” in 2005, and has never looked back.

  1. Brett and Jason Oppenheim – $50 million each

Brett and Jason Oppenheim are twin brothers and business moguls, who were born in April 1977 in Palo Alto, California. The real estate brokers studied at Mission San Jose High School; Jason, who is the more mediatic brother, received his undergraduate and J.D degrees from Berkeley’s University of California.

Brett and Jason’s great-great-grandfather Jacob Stern had moved to Hollywood in 1889, and founded The Stern Realty Co. The real estate entrepreneur would lay the foundations for what the Oppenheim Group represents today, as Brett and Jason are merely carrying on the family tradition, five generations later.

From 2003 to 2007, Jason also worked as an attorney for O’Melveny & Myers, a respected international law firm with corporate clients around the globe. The Hollywood Reporter has named him a Top Agent for several years; the brothers’ clientele includes celebrities such as Orlando Bloom, Taye Diggs and Jessica Alba, among others.

In July 2021, Jason confirmed his relationship with Chrishell; however, the pair broke up in December that year for unknown reasons. Previously, Jason had said that he would never date a co-worker, discounting his former relationship with Mary Fitzgerald given that they broke up before she joined the Oppenheim Group.
