The player decided to attend Ohio State University, where he majored in landscape design, and joined the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, playing the position of running back. He was considered as one of the most valuable players of the team and in 1995 won the Heisman Trophy. In 2011, it was announced that he would become an inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame.

In 1996 George entered the NF, being chosen by the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) as a 14th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft.
