Dolph was raised by his parents – his mother Sigrid Birgitta was a teacher, and his father Karl Hugo Johan Lundgren worked for the Swedish government as an engineer and economist; Dolph has two sisters, Annika and Katarina, and a younger brother, Johan.

At the age of 13, he moved from Spanga to his grandparent’s home in Nyland, where he earned his moniker ‘Dolph’ from a relative on his mother’s side. Dolph has spoken about his childhood, saying that his father was physically abusive, and that might be the reason why he developed a desire for practicing judo, karate and boxing, and in his teenage years he started lifting weights.

He attended a local high school, and upon matriculating with straight A’s in 1975, he earned an academic scholarship, and enrolled at Washington State University in the USA, and then also attended Clemson University before he went back to Sweden, and there enrolled at the Royal Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1979.

Dolph continued his education in Australia; he enrolled at the University of Sydney, from which he graduated with a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1982, and the following year, he was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), however, he quit studying to pursue his acting career.

He made his acting debut in the James Bond movie “A View to a Kill” in 1985, portraying Venz, followed by his famous role as Ivan Drago in “Rocky IV” also starring Sylvester Stallone, Burt Young, and Talia Shire. Two years later, he was cast to play He-Man in “Masters of the Universe”, alongside Meg Foster and Frank Langella.

In the following year, Dolph was seen as Lieutenant Nikolai Rachenko in “Red Scorpion”, followed by his roles in “The Punisher”, “Cover-Up”, and in 1992 “Universal Soldier” also starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ally Walker.

The early ‘90s also saw Dolph in “Hidden Assassin”, “The Peacekeeper”, and “Storm Catcher”, among others, while in the early 2000s, he starred in “Jill Rips”, “Agent Red”, “The Defender”, and in 2009 “Direct Contact”,.

In the following year, Dolph was cast to play Gunner Jensen in Sylvester Stallone’s movie “The Expendables”, also starring Jason Statham, Jet Li and Terry Crews, and then two years later Dolph reprised his role in the sequel “The Expendables 2”. He next starred in “Blood of Redemption” and “Puncture Wounds”, before his role as John Erikson in the series “SAF3”, in 2014.

The list of Dolph’s roles is too long to enumerate, thus we mention some of his most notable, such as his appearance in “The Expendables 3”, “Riot”, and “Kindergarten Cop 2”, and his most recent roles have been in movies such as “Dead Trigger”, “Creed II” in which he reprised his role as Ivan Drago, and “Aquaman” in 2019.

In the following years, he starred in “Pups Alone” and “Castle Falls”, while in 2022, he will be heard as the voice of the character Svengeance in “Minions 2: The Rise of Gru”.

Speaking about his personal life, before he met Ida’s mother, Dolph was in a relationship with the famous Jamaican singer Grace Jones, and after they broke up, he was seeing an American model, Paula Barbieri. As mentioned, from 1994 until 2011 he was in a marriage with Ida’s mother, Anette Qviberg, and then Dolph was in a relationship with Jenny Sandersson until they separated in 2017.

In June 2020, Dolph announced his engagement to Norwegian personal trainer, Emma Krokdal.

The trademark of this 64-year-old actor besides his square jaw, blonde hair and blue eyes, is his towering height and muscular physique; he weighs over 242lbs (110kgs) and is 6ft 5ins (1.96m) tall.
