Daymond grew up with his mother and grandfather, and even while still at high school he worked full time, and started his own commuter van service. The idea of starting a clothing business came to Daymond’s head after he saw wool hats being sold for 20 dollars each. Daymond considered them to be overpriced, and with his neighbour they made around 90 hats and sold them near the New York Coliseum, earning $800 in one day, Daymond continued by mortgaging his mother’s house for $100,000 for start-up capital, and invited his friends J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin into the business as he needed trustworthy people, and the company started sewing T-shirts, sweatshirts and hockey jerseys with the logo of FUBU – ‘For Us By Us’. In 1994 the FUBU Company took-off after visiting the worldwide fare in Las Vegas and receiving orders for over $300,000, and expanding so that in 1998 FUBU reported over $350,000 in revenues; currently FUBU is valued at $6 billion, a sizeable part of which represents Daymond John’s net worth.

In 2009, Daymond began his television career in the reality competition series ‘Shark Tank’, where every-day people offer their ideas for business, and five entrepreneurs decide whether the idea is worth investing in or not. During the show Daymond has invested over $700,000.

Additionally, Daymond John’s experience is now so valued that he is invited to numerous engagements as a motivational speaker, including AT&T’s History Makers Tour, California First Lady Maria Shriver’s Women’s Conference, and Babson College School of Entrepreneurship among many others.

Dyslexia is no problem for John; he is the author of two books – his autobiography ‘Display of Power’ and ‘The Brand Within’. In 2005, he appeared on the big screen in the film ‘The Crow: Wicked Prayer’ directed by Lance Mungia as Proud Foot Joe. Later, he appeared in the television series ‘The Game’ created by Mara Brock Akil, and the talk show ‘The Real’.

He has also been rewarded with various awards including the Advertising Age Marketing 1000 Award for Outstanding Ad Campaign, Ernst & Young’s New York Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the NAACP Entrepreneur of the Year Award which he won twice, among others.

In his personal life, on an episode of “Shark Tank” in 2016, he proposed to long-time girlfriend Heather Taras, with whom he has two children. He still lives in New York City.
