During his time there, he also fulfilled obligations in the military as part of the USAF Reserve.

Three years later, Ladd started his career in Hollywood when he was cast in a supporting role in the film “The Big Land”, which starred his father actor. The film was successful and it led to another project for David called “The Proud Rebel”, in which he played a mute, and for which he won a Golden Globe Award for “Best Newcomer”. More opportunities opened up for him, and his net worth started to increase – his next projects would include “The Sad Horse”, “Raymie”, “Zane Grey Theatre”, and “A Dog of Flanders”, continuing making films throughout the 1970s.

In 1982, Ladd then started working at Columbia Pictures as a creative executive. He then joined his brother-in-law in a new production company based at Columbia. After MGM was sold, Ladd left the company and became independent, but also started working with other companies such as Universal, Fox, and Paramount. In 2008, he helped create “Leaving Barstow” which would win several awards, and also taught film production at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Ladd is an emeritus member of the Screen Actors Guild, and is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as the Producers Guild of America.
