Gennady Golovkin is from Russian and Korean ancestry. When he was just eight years old, he and his brother, Sergey, joined the Soviet Army, and then it was his brother that pushed him to try boxing as a career. As an amateur boxer, he did very well, earning himself a scholarship with Olympic Solidarity Program in 2002. He managed to win a gold medal at the World Amateur Boxing Championship that was held in Bangkok in 2003, beating the well-renowned champion Matvey Korobov.
Gennady Golovkin decided to go for the 2004 Summer Olympics, and he succeeded by defeating Ramadan Yasser and Andre Dirrell to reach the final, however, he lost to Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov, thereby winning the silver medal. Some of his other amateur winning highlights include the Junior 2000 World Championship held in Budapest, Hungary; 20002 All Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea; and 2003 World Championship.
In 2005, Gennady made the critical decision to end his amateur career and start professional boxing. That same year, he signed a deal with Universum Box-Promotion, and making his debut in mid-2006. After a string of over 20 wins and no losses, he terminated his contract with the company in January 2010, as he felt that he was being obstructed from fighting at the highest level, having only achieved the WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title, subsequently signing with K2. He then defeated in succession Chris Nunez, Tapia, Kassim Ouma, Lajuan Simon, Makoto Fuchigami, Grzegorz Proksa, Gabriel Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida and Curtis Stevens, winning or defending one or more of his WBO, WBA, WBC and IBO titles each time. On 3 June 2014, after 10 successful defenses, he was elevated by the World Boxing Association to Super Champion from Middleweight Champion. He subsequently attracted top fighters such as Daniel Geale, Murray and David Lemieux to fight him, but defeated all of them to continue holding his titles. These fights saw him earn a huge salary, adding to his net worth with every fight.
Gennady has now unified the titles, and is next scheduled to fight Dominic Wade in April 2016 in defence of all of them, Following his last win against Saul Alvarez, talks began between the two camps over a re-match title defence in the future, which is expected later in 2016.
In his personal life, Gennady lived in Kazakhstan, but moved to Germany in 2006 to grow his boxing career. He later moved to Los Angeles, California in 2014, where he lives with Aline, his wife, and Vadim, his son.
