Chris’ father Claus is a Danish immigrant and a corrections officer, and mother Linda a waitress. Chris played basketball in high school, convinced to play by the varsity coach, since the sport was an opportunity for him to get a college education. After matriculating, he attended Blinn College and played a season with the Blinn Buccaneers, leading in blocks in the whole National Junior College Athletic Association during that season.
In 1999, Andersen dropped out of Blinn to pursue a professional basketball career. He played exhibition games with the semi-professional Texas Ambassadors and was then offered a place in the Chinese Basketball Association as part of the Jiangsu Nangang Dragons. The following year, he joined the International Basketball League to play with the New Mexico Slam, then signed with the Dakota Wizards but left shortly after, and in 2001played for the Fargo-Moorhead Beez in the IBA, before joining the Southwest Basketball League Sugarland Sharks later in the year. Andersen then joined the NBA Summer League as part of the Cleveland Cavaliers, which led him to sign with the Phoenix Suns but he was waived shortly after, and so joined the NBA Development League as part of the Fayetteville Patriots.
Chris would become the first D-League player to be called by an NBA team, when he signed with the Denver Nuggets after two games with Fayetteville, rapidly becoming one of the top shot blockers and rebounders in the team, so earning the nickname “Birdman”, and continuing to play with the team until in 2004, when he secured a multi-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets, which significantly increased his net worth, and even appeared in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest the following year. The Hornets moved to Oklahoma the following year due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. In 2006, Chris was disqualified from the NBA after testing positive for a banned substance, which led him to miss the next two years as he went to rehab, meantime working as a coach.
Andersen returned to the NBA after being granted his request to be reinstated in 2008, signing a one year deal with the Denver Nuggets which would then lead to another five-year deal which built up his net worth once again. However in 2012, due to high luxury tax, the team had to waive Andersen, so he signed with the Miami Heat, contributing to the team’s success, for example during the Eastern Conference Finals breaking Alonzo Mourning’s franchise playoff record as he shot 15 for 15, and would win the NBA championship with Miami in 2013.
He continued to play for Miami until 2016, when he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, later signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers but sustaining an ACL tear injury which ended his season. In 2017, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets but was waived shortly after.
For his personal life, Chris is rumoured to be engaged to longtime girlfriend Tina Wiseman. Chris is note for his tattoos, the first tattoo was given by his mother during his 18th birthday. In 2012, he was investigated on suspicion of an internet criminal case but was not charged. The following year, it was revealed that Chris was actually the victim of a hoax orchestrated by a woman from Canada who was subsequently sentenced to jail.
