Chico is the son of the famed musician Robert DeBarge, Sr. and his wife Etterlene, and is part French, part African-American. He grew up in his hometown, and from an early age was influenced by R&B, soul and funk music, since his siblings and almost the whole family were a part of the group DeBarge. However, as he got older, Chico decided not to perform with the family group, and focused on a solo career. He signed a contract with Motown Records in 1985. and a year later his debut album came out, entitled “Chico DeBarge”. The album reached No. 90 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the single “Talk To Me” became an instant hit, helping increase album sales and in that way Chico`s net worth too.
This encouraged him to continue with his solo career, and in 1988, Chico released his second album, called “Kiss Serious”, however, the album didn`t receive much praise from the critics or public as well, which saw Chico succumb to drug addiction. He and his career sank further when he was charged for drug possession and trafficking, and spent time in prison. He was released in the mid-‘90s and decided to get back on track, releasing his third album “Long Time No See”, which reached No. 86 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was released through Kedar Entertainment, founded by Kedar Massenberg, who then became president of Motown Records, and signed Chico to the label. DeBarge released his fourth album, entitled “The Game”, which became the best charting album of his career, peaking at No.
41 on the Billboard 200 chart. Since the beginning of the ‘00s Chico has released two more albums – “Free” in 2003 through Koch Records, which reached No. 43 on the Top Independent Albums chart, and “Addiction” in 2009, his second album released by Kedar Entertainment, which also improved his net worth.
Regarding his personal life, Chico has been married to Andrea Bordenave since 1996, and although in 2009 Andrea apparently filed for divorce, their marriage is still official. The couple have five children.
Chico has had several problems with the law; in 2007 he was once again arrested for drug possession, and after release entered a rehab center. In 2003 DeBarge was stabbed by John Gongs, who is allegedly an Italian mafia member, but he recuperated from the injury, and continued with his musical career.
