He went to Steel Valley High School, and after matriculation enrolled at Eastern Michigan University, from which he received a degree in criminal justice. During his college career Charlie set almost every school football passing record under his name, and as a result he received several awards, including the First-team All-MAC in 1995.
His professional career started in 1998 when he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the NFL Draft. In his first season, Charlie started 12 games and had 2,178 passing yards, which was enough for 11 touchdowns, and a passing rating of 83.5. For the next season, Charlie had to import running to his game, due to the retirement of Barry Sanders. Unfortunately, he couldn’t catch the rhythm, but he managed to compensate for it with his passing skills, and eventually had 1,957 passing yards for 13 touchdowns. His third season was the best of his career, as he had 2,489 passing yards and again 13 touchdowns. He repeated the success in 2001, however, he was injured for several games and was replaced by Ty Detmer. His career then began to decline, and he was cut by the Lions for Joey Harrington, and so signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but eventually stayed with the Steelers until the end of his career in 2012. He renewed his contract several times, which only increased his net worth, however, he was used only as a backup and saw limited playing time. Nevertheless, he won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers, in 2005 and 2008.
