Cari Champion was born and raised in Pasadena, California. She majored in English at the University of California, Los Angeles, with a minor in mass communications. She was inspired by Matea Gold from the Los Angeles Times to pursue a career in journalism; she was a prominent speaker in her classes, and also wrote for the Daily Bruin. She worked at various small television channels before moving to West Virginia, where she had her first reporting job. She has stated that she used to work alone, herself carrying the camera and tripod, literally a one women crew, but she loved it as it was her dream as she had always wanted to be a reporter. Later she worked for Orange County News channel as a reporter, before moving to West Palm Beach, Florida where she started working for WPTV-TV.

When working for WGCL-TV in Atlanta, Cari was fired for saying some profane word on the air, but later she was re-hired. Later she moved to Florida where she covered stories about the hurricanes occurring in the state. In her personal life, she has never married, and states that currently she is single. She has always been a fan of basketball, her favorite teams being the Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA Bruins. She was once a target of a racist comment by comedian Artie Lange, who later apologized to her but she never made a public comment about it.
