Cummings attended St. John’s High School but would drop out due to poor grades. He joined the band The Deverons and they released two singles through REO Records. In 1966 he was asked by The Guess Who to join the band after the death of keyboardist Bob Ashley, and just a few months later he became the lead singer after front man Chad Allan left the group. From then, The Guess Who released a lot of charting songs in Canada; they had the successful album called “A Wild Pair”, but didn’t find any mainstream success until they released the international hit “These Eyes”. They followed it up by releasing more hit songs such as “Laughing”, “Undun”, and “American Woman”. However bandmate Randy Bachman would soon leave the band due to conflicts with Burton, and Burton would become the band leader, and they would continue to record hits such as “Rain Dance”, “Albert Flasher”, and “Dancin’ Fool”.

In 1975, Cummings then left the band to pursue a career as a solo artist. Two years later he was presented a Juno Award for best male vocalist. He continued releasing songs such as “Stand Tall” which also became a hit in America. He continued with other charting songs such as “Saved My Soul”. He also tried his hand in acting, appearing in the film “Melanie” which featured several of his songs, and he wrote songs and sang for films in the 1970s.

In 2000, The Guess Who toured once again and he would also reunite with Randy Bachman as The Bachman-Cummings Band. The group has released a compilation album, and Burton has also toured solo with a back-up band, and released a live CD entitled “Burton Cummings Live at Massey Hall” in 2011.

Burton was named an officer of the Order of Canada to mark his lifetime of achievements and service to the nation. He also announced a poetry book called “The Writings of B. L. Cummings” but it has not been released. He received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2011 and was inducted to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2016. His high school rewarded him with an honorary diploma 45 years after he dropped out.

For his personal life, it is known that Burton married Cheryl DeLuca in 1981.
