Early life, family, and education

Bryan celebrates his birthday on 3 May, and was born in 1989, in Montclair, California USA, but was raised in Rancho Cucamonga, a Mexican land grant (present-day San Bernardino County), California. He holds American nationality but comes from a family of Colombian descent, and this is the reason why he brings both flags to his fights.

His father, whose name he hasn’t shared, is originally from Cali, Colombia, but there is nothing known about his mother. Bryan has three siblings, two brothers and a sister, whose names he also hasn’t revealed.

Bryan had an interest in sports from an early age, and played football in high school; he moved to Arizona in his sophomore year, and played linebacker at Prescott High School in Arizona. Upon matriculating in 2007, he didn’t go to college but began training in MMA.

Career beginnings

Bryan joined the MMA Lab in Arizona, and made his professional debut in 2009 – his amateur record was just 1-0. In the following years, Bryan gained a record of 9-2 fighting in promotions such as the Dakota Fighting Championship.

He also competed in the Southern California-based MMA promotion King of the Cage, which features mostly amateurs and up-and-coming MMA stars, where he won all but one of his fights before the final bell.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Bryan made his UFC debut on 13 December 2014, against Joe Ellenberger, now retired MMA fighter and former US Marine. Bryan won the fight with a technical knockout (TKO) in the third round.

His next fight was against Chad Laprise, also a now retired Canadian MMA fighter, held on 25 April 2015, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Bryan lost the fight, but both competitors were awarded Fight of the Night honors.

Bryan won his third fight, against Sage Northcutt, an MMA fighter who is currently competing in the Lightweight division.

In the following years, Bryan faced numerous MMA fighters, subsequently leaving MMA Lab to begin training with Gym-O camp, in Gastonia, North Carolina. One of his fights held on 17 February 2019 at UFC against Vicente Luque brought him the Fight of the Night Award.

His fans could hardly wait for the announced fight against Daniel Rodriguez, which was supposed to be on 14 November 2020, however, unfortunately Bryan underwent emergency surgery, a laparotomy, a surgical procedure that involves making an incision in the abdominal wall to gain access to the abdominal cavity, which explains the scar Bryan has. Reportedly, Bryan had ‘internal bleeding from a couple of ruptured arteries in his omentum’ announced his team via a post on his Instagram.

He recovered successfully, and was seen in the ring on 31 July 2021, against Jason Witt of UFC on the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) 28 – although he lost, he earned another Fight of the Night Award.

On 4 December of that same year, Bryan was scheduled to fight against Matt Brown, but since Matt was positive for Covid-19, he was replaced by Darian Weeks, who lost the fight via unanimous decision.

In 2022, Bryan was finally seen against Matt Brown at UFC on ESPN 33, which Bryan won, also winning the Fight of the Night Award. His second Fight of the Night award in 2022 came against Robbie Lawler on 2 July 2022 at UFC 276, held at the T-Mobile Arena, in Paradise, Nevada US – Bryan won by TKO in the second round.

During his career so far, Bryan has had 26 matches, of which 18 were victories (11 via knockout). His next opponent is a Brazilian American MMA fighter, a former UFC lightweight champion, who is today ranked #7 in the UFC lightweight rankings named Rafael dos Anjos, who is known for his aggressive striking, while Bryan’s TKO is his well-known ‘final touch’. Fans of the UFC have different expectations, but they’ll have to wait for the scheduled fight.

Bryan’s fans can enjoy watching him against Rafael dos Anjos, on 3 December 2022 for UFC on ESPN 42, at Amway Center, in Orlando, Florida US.

Love life and relationships

Bryan hasn’t been the subject of any rumors and controversies when it comes to his personal life. Since 2011, he’s a married man, and his wife Diana seems to be very supportive of his UFC career.

They have three children together, two boys and one girl, whose names and birthdates they haven’t revealed. It appears that they prefer to keep their children’s lives away from the media’s attention, and since Diana’s Instagram account is private, it’s believed that she is also secretive when it comes to her personal matters.

Bryan occasionally posts photos featuring his family, with the description full of love and pride. It’s known that Diane and Bryan are the co-owners of the company called The Bam Bam Farm, and according to photos posted on the official Instagram page, Diana is very dedicated to animals and organic products on their farm, which the family of five lives near, in Tennessee.
