Haywood grew up under the care of his mother, moving around New York before moving south. He attended B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he is now on the honour roll. At seven feet tall he was a basketball natural, and won North Carolina Basketball Player of the Year in his senior year.
Haywood matriculated to the University of North Carolina in 1997, taking centre position on the school team, the Tar Heels. In the NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels reached the final four teams, in 2000. He graduated with a degree in communications.
Upon leaving college in 2001, Haywood joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, picked 20th in the first round of the NBA Draft. He was quickly moved to the Orlando Magic, and then was traded on to the Washington Wizards, the team with which he made his pro debut.
