Who is Billy Beane?

William Lamar ‘Billy’ Beane II was born in Orlando, Florida USA, on 29 March 1962 – his zodiac sign is Aries, and he holds American nationality. He’s a former professional baseball player, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB), while he’s today a front office executive. Billy’s life was documented in the critically acclaimed 2011 biographical sports movie “Moneyball”, directed by Bennett Miller, and which starred Brad Pitt as Billy, Robin Wright and Jonah Hill; it follows Billy as he’s trying to acquire new baseball players for his team, while on a lean budget. The movie won 29 of the 117 awards for which it was nominated, including six Oscar nominations.

Early life and education

Billy spent the first couple of years of his life in Mayport, Florida before the family moved to San Diego, California, where he was raised alongside his younger brother Brandon Beane, born on 27 July 1976. Their father was a US Navy officer, and it was he who taught Billy to pitch; the boys’ mother was also in the military.

Billy was mostly interested in sports while attending Mt. Carmel High School, and played basketball, football and baseball for the school teams; he was mostly into baseball, and batted .501 during his first two years there, and .300 during his fourth year. Billy eventually quit playing football, because he wanted to avoid an injury which could potentially prevent him from becoming a professional baseball player.

He matriculated in 1980, and although he had given up on football, Stanford University offered Billy a joint baseball and football scholarship; he rejected the offer, and made himself eligible for the MLB draft.

Career as a professional baseball player

Billy was the 23rd overall pick, by the New York Mets in the 1980 MLB Draft; he signed with them for a $125,000 signing bonus, which would be equal to $400,000 today, later revealing that he chose to sign with the Mets instead of enrolling at Stanford because of the money.

Billy didn’t reach his full potential in his first season, and batted only .210; he spent that first year playing with the Little Falls Mets of Class A New York – Penn League, then the following year playing for the Lynchburg Mets of Class A – Advanced Carolina League, and in 1982, Billy played for the Jackson Mets of Class AA Texas League.

He began playing for the Mets of MLB in 1984, appearing in five games during the season, but still spent the majority of it playing for the Tidewater Tides of Class AAA International League. During the 1985 season, Billy played eight games for the Mets, but was then traded to the Minnesota Twins of MLB, playing in 80 games during the 1986 season, and 12 in the 1987 season.

Billy was traded to the Detroit Tigers of MLB in 1988, but played in only six games during that season. He was then made a free agent, and signed with the Oakland Athletics of MLB in the second half of 1988, playing 37 games in the 1989 season.

Later career

Billy was sent to minor leagues following the 1989 season, but as he quickly became bored of being a minor league player, he became an advance scout for the Athletics, a job which he held until 1993, when he became the Athletics’ assistant general manager.

On 17 October 1997, Billy was appointed general manager of the Athletics, succeeding Sandy Alderson who had taught him about scouting minor league players; in the 2006 MLB season, the Athletics ranked 24th of 30 MLB teams in salaries, but ranked the fifth best team during the season.

They reached the play-offs in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 – the year 2002 saw them become the first baseball team in over 100 years to win 20 games in a row.

Also in 2002, Billy was offered $12.5 million to become the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, but he rejected it; his contract with the Athletics was extended on 15 April 2005, and Billy was also rewarded with a small percentage of the team’s ownership. His contract was extended once again in February 2012, through 2019, however, on 5 October 2015, Billy was promoted to his current position as executive vice president of baseball operations, with David Lee Frost taking over his previous role.

Wife and daughter

Billy prefers to keep the details of his love life away from the media’s attention, but it’s still widely known that he’s married twice.

He married his first wife Cathy Sturdivant on 1 February 1986; Cathy’s a non-celebrity American woman, and not a lot about her is known. She gave birth to their daughter Cassey a couple of years later, but Cathy and Billy divorced sometime in the mid-‘90s.

He exchanged vows with his second wife Tara Beane in 1999; Tara focused on being a housewife following the wedding, and gave birth to their twins Tinsley and Brayden Beane.

Billy hasn’t spoken of any other women whom he has perhaps been with, and as of June 2022, he’s married to his second wife Tara Beane, with whom he has twins Tinsley and Brayden; he also has a daughter Cassey with his first wife Cathy Sturdivant.

Hobbies and other interests

Billy’s a huge fan of soccer, and has tried to develop a system for analyzing soccer players; he’s held discussions with various soccer managers, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and John W. Henry. In March 2015, he was hired to work as an advisor for the Dutch soccer team AZ Alkmaar.

Billy’s interested in software development, and on 4 January 2007 joined the board of directors of the company NetSuite.

He’s a philanthropist, and has donated money to a couple of charity organizations, mostly to those which aim to bring underprivileged children closer to sports, especially baseball.

Billy’s passionate about travelling, and his career has taken him all around the world; he has visited nearly all US states, and his dream travel destination is London, England.
