Bashar Al-assad was raised with five siblings in a political family, as the son of Hafez al-Assad, who was a politician and the President of Syria from 1971 to 2000, and Anisa Makhlouf. Bashar received his primary and secondary education attending the Arab-French al-Hurriya School in Damascus, andafter matriculating in 1982, he enrolled at Damascus University to study medicine. Right after graduation in 1988, he started to work as an army doctor in a military hospital named “Tishrin”, where he spent four years. Later, he moved to London, England, where he earned a post-graduate degree in Ophthalmology.

Before Assad turned to politics, he worked as doctor in the Syrian army, from his graduation in 1988 until the death of his brother in 1994. After that, Assad turned to politics, joining his father, and sharing his plans. Little by little, his involvement grew, and the total number of his supporters also increased. Assad then joined the military academy at Homs in 1994, and in five years reached the ranks of colonel. He was groomed to become the next Syrian president, and after the death of his father in 2000, Bashar became just that, winning more than 90 % of the votes, as he was unopposed. This subsequently increased Assad`s net worth by a large margin. He assumed the office on the 17th July, and ever since then has been the leader of the Syrian people.

Seven years later, Assad was elected again as the President, with 97% of votes, again without an opposition candidate. However, his leadership led to the Syrian Civil War, with demands for a new constitution and civil rights. Assad has since then has been fighting against his own people, which has led to sanctions by USA, Canada, and European countries, such as Germany, France and Spain.

The civil war continues as of mid-2016, and several thousands of innocent people have already lost their lives, with many other leaving their native country in order to avoid death, and to seek better life, while Assad remains the president of the Syria, which is the main source of his overall wealth. When it comes to speak about his personal life, Bashar al-Assad has been married to Asma al-Assad – a British-Syrian national born in the UK – since December of 2000; they are the parents of three children.
