He played college football as a quarterback, but had to take a break for a year to complete his academic qualifications. Antwaan would help the team win numerous games and would become the 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year – the success of his college football career led the title to be changed to the Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year Award. He became the first player in NCAA Division I to score 40 career rushing touchdowns and pass 40 career touchdowns overall. While playing football, he also had time to play varsity basketball for a few seasons.
