Seven Sirius Benjamin Mother Erykah Badu Biography
Born as Erica Abi Wright on 26 February 1971, in Dallas, to Kolleen Maria Gipson and William Wright Jr., her mother raised her, her brother Eevin and her sister after her father left the family.
At just four years old, Erykah performed at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
As she got older, Erykah’s interest in music increased, and by the time she turned 14, she was already performing freestyle rap on local radio stations.
She attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and after matriculation, enrolled at Grambling State University, where she studied theater, however, Erykah left her studies before obtaining a degree, as she focused entirely on music.
She toured with her cousin Robert ‘Free’ Bradford and recorded a 19 song demo entitled “Country Cousins” which reached Kedar Massenburg, who set Badu up to record a duet with American singer D’Angelo. Their song “Your Precious Love” became an instant hit in the neo-soul music scene, and Badu then signed a record deal with Universal Records.
Her debut studio album “Baduizm” came out in 1997, and became a complete success, achieving triple platinum status, and topping the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart, while it reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
She continued to dominate the R&B scene throughout the 2000s, with such albums as “Mama’s Gun” (2000), “Worldwide Underground” (2003), then “New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)” in 2008, and her fifth album overall “New Marerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)”, released in 2010.
Some of her most popular songs are “On & On”, “Tyrone”, “Bag Lady”, “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)”, and “Window Seat”, among others.
She hasn’t released any new music as a solo artist since 2010, but has worked with such musicians as Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, GZA on the song “Drivin’ Round” in 2012, then with Papoose on the song “Cure” in 2013, while in 2020, she collaborated with Teyana Taylor on the song “Lowkey”.
Erykah has continued to perform, and her recent tour, “Live From Badubotron Tour,” lasted from 2021 to 2022.
As of early 2022, Erykah Badu’s net worth has been estimated to be around $10 million, earned through her career as a singer/songwriter.
She has faced various negative comments, especially for her support of convicted sex offender R. Kelly.
Erykah has been known for her high-profile relationships. After breaking up with Andre 3000, she dated rapper Common from 2000 to 2002, was then in a relationship with the rapper the DOC, and from 2004 to 2009, dated Jay Electronica. Most recently, she was in a relationship with producer Carl Jones from 2013 to 2018.
