Who is J. Alphonse Nicholson?
American actor and drummer J. Alphonse Nicholson was born in Greensboro, North Carolina USA, on 6 July 1985, making Cancer his zodiac sign. He’s appeared in 25 TV series and movies, and is perhaps best known for portraying one of the main characters Lil Murda in the popular crime series “P-Valley”, created by Katori Hall, and which also stars Shannon Thornton and Nicco Annan. It follows the lives of a group of strip-club dancers, the series has been airing since 2020, and has won seven of its 46 award nominations.
Early life and education
Alphonse was raised alongside his sister Sade in Greensboro, by their father and mother about whom he doesn’t usually speak in public, because he respects their privacy; it’s believed that his father worked various jobs to financially support the family, and that his mother was a housewife.
Alphonse became interested in acting during his time at James B. Dudley High School; he appeared in a number of school plays, mostly portraying lead characters. He was also passionate about sports, playing both soccer and basketball for the school teams.
Upon matriculating in 2003, Alphonse enrolled at North Carolina Central University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2007; he spent the following five years working a number of jobs to financially support himself, while attending auditions for roles in both movies and TV series.

Alphonse’s debut film role was playing Atlanta Hitchhiker in the 2013 comedy “Don’t Know Yet”, written and directed by Terry Linehan, and which starred James Kyson, Lisa Goldstein Kirsch and David Andrews; it follows a heartbroken man as he’s giving rides to hitchhikers.
His following two roles were in the 2015 short drama “A Burial Hymn”, and the 2017 musical crime drama “Hit a Lick”, while the year 2019 saw him star as Terence in the comedy “Perfectly Single”, written and directed by Van Elder, and which also starred Omar Gooding and Erica Hubbard. It follows a socially awkward optometrist, who’s been convinced by her friends to start going out on dates.
Alphonse’s also known for playing Henry Davis in the critically acclaimed 2019 biographical crime drama “Just Mercy”, which Destin Daniel Cretton wrote and directed, and which starred Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson. It follows the defense lawyer Bryan Stevenson as he’s trying to free a prisoner wrongfully sentenced to death, and the movie won nine of its 28 award nominations.
Alphonse’s three most recent film roles have been in the comedy “Before/During/After” and the drama “Wheels” both in 2020, and the 2021 drama “Mother’s Milk”. He’s currently shooting for four upcoming movies, which include “Southern Gospel”, “They Cloned Tyrone” and “White Men Can’t Jump”.
Roles in TV series
Alphonse’s debut TV series role was playing Schlenger in the 2015 episode “Hold Outs” of the crime mystery “Blue Bloods”, and the following year saw him play Andre in two episodes of the popular crime thriller “Mr. Robot”, which Sam Esmail created, and which starred Carly Chaikin, Christian Slater and Rami Malek. It follows a hacker and his colleagues as they’re trying to bring down a corrupt corporation, the series aired from 2015 through 2019, and won 24 of the 210 awards for which it was nominated.
Alphonse could then have been seen appearing in an episode or two of the crime action “Luke Cage”, the crime drama “Shots Fired”, and the crime mystery “The Blacklist”.
One of his most recent TV series roles has been playing John Robinson in three episodes of the 2020 biographical historical mini-series “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker”, which starred Octavia Spencer, Tiffany Haddish and Carmen Ejogo, and follows the life of African-American entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker; the mini-series won four of its 14 award nominations.

Alphonse composed music for, and produced the 2022 short drama movie “Butterfly Boxing”.

Alphonse avoids speaking about his love life when giving interviews, but has still revealed that he has a wife and a son. He’s married to American non-celebrity Nafeesha Kausar, but Alphonse hasn’t shared any other details concerning her, although has still featured her in a couple of his Instagram pictures. It’s widely believed that Alphonse and Nafeesha exchanged vows in 2022, and that their son Bryce Nicholson was born in the same year, but neither of these two dates have been confirmed by Alphonse.
He’s yet to mention other women whom he’s perhaps been with, Alphonse’s married to Nafeesha Kausar as of February 2023, and they have a son together.
