Although born in Manhattan, Jose grew up in The Bronx, New York City and also in South Florida, living with his mother and three sisters. He went to Homestead High School, but didn`t matriculate as he left school when he was 17 years old. He became a father and got married, nevertheless, he later earned his GED diploma, and decided to join the U.S Navy in 1986. For the next three years, Jose was appointed to NATO, at Norfolk, Virginia, where he was trained to become an intelligence agent, while holding Top Secret security clearance.

Following his discharge in 1989, Jose enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College, but later transferred to Florida State University, from which he graduated with a BA degree, and continued his education at St. Thomas University School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1997. Following his graduation, Jose tried to take the state bar exam, but was denied due to his financial status. However, he found a job as an intern at the Miami Dade Public Defender`s office. Six years later, he was admitted to the bar, as his financial situation improved.

After he received his license, Jose focused on criminal defense cases and since then has worked on such cases as Elvira Garcia, who was charged for kidnapping a child that she had previously adopted as her own; thanks to his skills, Elvira was freed of all charges. His next case was that of Nilton Diaz; Nilton was charged with the murder of the two year-old granddaughter of Wilfredo Vazquez, World Boxing Champion, and because of that, media was 100% present at the trial, and Nilton was also acquitted. Since than he has been involved in more than 45 jury trial cases, which includes five murders cases, in which none of his defendants was convicted of first degree murder.

His most popular work was the case of Casey Anthony, in which the mother was charged with killing her own two year-old daughter. She was released from jail on 17th July 2011, after spending three years behind bars for giving false information to police officers. Her daughter`s skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near the family home, wrapped in a blanket inside a trash can. According to defense evidence, the child`s grandparent George Anthony disposed her body after the child drowned in the family swimming pool. Casey alone was scared of confessing, as her father had been abusive towards her in her childhood, and ever since then she was in fear of him.
After the trial ended, Jose stated that there were no winners in this case, since the girl was dead, and her mother was falsely accused. Jose collaborated with sports journalist and writer Peter Golenbock to write “Presumed Guilty” (2012), about Casey Anthony Case, and in no time the book became a bestseller, which also increased his net worth by a large margin.

Other of Jose`s cases included George Zimmerman who was accused of killing Traywon Martin, a 17 year old African American high school student, and thanks to Jose, George was cleared of all charges, as the United States Department of Justice stated there was not enough evidence for a federal hate crime prosecution.

Most recently, he started working with Aaron Hernandez, trying to appeal his conviction for murdering Odin Lloyd.

Regarding his personal life, Jose is married to Lorena, and they have one child. He likes to travel when not working.
