Yellowman was raised in the orphanage Alpha Boys School, that was part of a Catholic church. Growing up, Yellowman was often ridiculed due to his albinism, but Alpha Boys School nurtured the musical talents of its students and it wasn’t different with Yellowman. As he got older, he became more focused on music, and it was in the late ‘70s that he first gained attention; he won the Tastee Talent Contest held in Kingston, Jamaica, and after a couple of years was offered a recording contract by the Columbia Records, after obtaining national popularity in Jamaica.
His debut album came out in 1982 – “Mister Yellowman” – and then the eponymous “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” in 1983. Since then, he has released over 50 albums, the sales of which have increased his wealth to a large degree. Although he remains active to the present day, his career peaked in the ‘80s, when he would produce five albums per year, and had 40 charting singles. However, he was criticized for his sexually explicit lyrics, and the fans grew tired of his songs, but in 1994 he released the album “Prayer”, which again put him on the map, and his popularity soared once again. His last studio album came out in 2005 -“Round 1” – while he released a compilation album in 2013, entitled “Reggae Anthology: Young, Gifted & Yellow”.
