Who is Wendy Crewson?

Wendy Jane Crewson was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on 9 May 1956 – her zodiac sign is Taurus, and she holds Canadian nationality. She’s an actress and film producer, with close to 150 acting credits to her name, but probably still known best for her portrayal of Grace Marshall in the 1997 action thriller movie “Air Force One”. It was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, starred Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Glenn Close, and follows communist radicals who’ve hijacked the plane Air Force One with the US president and his family on board; the movie won seven of the 22 awards for which it was nominated, including two Oscar nominations for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.

There are rumors circulating the internet claiming that Wendy’s retired from acting, but these have been proven false, as she’s currently shooting for several upcoming movies and TV series.

Early life and education

Wendy was raised in Hamilton alongside her younger brother Brad, by their father Robert Binnie Crewson and mother June Doreen (nee Thomas); not a lot about Wendy’s family is known, as she respects their privacy, but it’s believed that her father was a theatre actor, and her mother a dancer.

Wendy became interested in acting while studying at John Rennie High School (Pointe Claire, Quebec). and appeared in numerous plays performed at the school; she was also quite sporting during her teenage years, and played both volleyball and soccer for school teams.

Wendy matriculated in 1974, and although she wanted to pursue acting straight away, she was urged by her parents to pursue a college degree; she thus enrolled at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1978. During her time at Queen’s, Wendy won a Lorne Greene Award for her performance in theatre plays.

She also practiced acting in London, England, at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

Roles in movies

Wendy made her debut film appearance in the 1980 drama “War Brides”, while a couple of her following roles were in the 1982 adventure fantasy drama “Mazes and Monsters”, the 1983 horror comedy “Skullduggery”, and the 1984 drama “Heartsounds”.

She only gained recognition in 1991, when cast to play Leslie Abbott in the drama “The Doctor”, directed by Randa Haines, and which starred William Hurt, Christine Lahti and Elizabeth Perkins. It follows an egoistic doctor who’s just been diagnosed with cancer, and the movie was nominated for three awards. In 2004, Wendy played Isabel Morrow in the romantic drama “A Home at the End of the World”, directed by Michael Mayer, and which starred Colin Farrell, Dallas Roberts and Robin Wright. It follows a boy who’s entered a love triangle with a girl and his childhood friend, and the movie won one of the six awards for which it was nominated.

A couple of Wendy’s following notable performances were in the 2006 action adventure fantasy “The Covenant”, the 2010 comedy drama “A Beginner’s Guide to Endings”, and the 2014 drama “Fall”.

Her most recent film role has been her portrayal of Mrs Applebaum in the 2020 mystery comedy drama “The Kid Detective”, written and directed by Evan Morgan, and which starred Kaitlyn Chalmers-Rizzato, Adam Brody and Kaleb Horn. It follows a former kid detective who’s now 32 years old, and is trying to solve his first serious case; the movie was nominated for five awards.

Roles in TV series

Wendy made her debut TV series appearance in the 1981 episode “The Locket” of the adventure family drama “The Littlest Hobo”, and the remainder of the ‘80s saw her appear in an episode or two of various series, such as the comedy “Hangin’ In”, the adventure comedy drama “Adderly” and the action adventure comedy “CBS Summer Playhouse”.

She appeared in only a couple of TV series in the ‘90s, while the most popular amongst these was probably the drama “Black Harbour”; it starred Rebbeca Jenkins, Melanie Ann Foley and Barrett Porter, and tells the story of a Los Angeles chef who’s moved to Nova Scotia with her husband and two daughters so that she could help her mother run her boatyard. The series aired from 1996 to 1999, and won one of the nine awards for which it was nominated.

Wendy played Maggie Steech in all the six episodes of the 2001 drama “The Beast”, and then portrayed Dr. Anne Packard in eight episodes of the 2003 action crime drama “24”. In 2007 and 2008, she played Rachel Woods in the mystery science fiction drama “ReGenesis”, created by Christina Jennings, and which starred Peter Outerbridge, Conrad Pla and Dmitry Chepovetsky. It follows the geneticist David Sandstrom as he’s working at the NORBAC laborator; the series aired from 2004 to 2008 and won nine of the 58 awards for which it was nominated.

Some of Wendy’s most recent roles in TV series have been in 12 episodes of the romantic drama “When Hope Calls” between 2019 and 2021, 13 episodes of the 2022 drama “Good Sam”, and the pilot episode of the 2022 thriller “Gray”.

Other credits

Wendy received special thanks for both the 1998 animated adventure comedy movie “Antz”, and the 2000 short documentary film “The 6th Day: The Future Is Coming”.

Wendy’s won 10 of the 23 awards for which she’s been nominated – some of her wins include a 2007 ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence for a Significant Body of Work and Union Activism, a 2011 WIFTS Foundation International Visionary Barbara Tipple Award for Best Actress, and a 2013 Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Series, for “Saving Hope”.

Love life and relationships

Wendy prefers not to share the details of her love life with the public, but has still allowed her fans to have a glimpse into it. She exchanged vows with Michael Murphy on 7 March 1988, in a large ceremony attended by many of their friends and family members; Michael’s an American actor with more than 100 credits to his name, perhaps still known best for his portrayal of Yale in the critically acclaimed 1979 romantic comedy movie “Manhattan”.

Wendy gave birth to their daughter Maggie in 1989, and their son John Branton ‘Jack’ Murphy followed in 1992; however, Wendy and Michael’s divorce was finalized on 10 January 2009. They remained on good terms, and even appeared alongside in the 2014 drama movie “Fall”.

Wendy revealed in December 2014 that she’s lesbian, possibly the reason for her divorce – it’s widely believed that she was in a relationship with Julie Bristow in 2015 and 2016; Julie’s the president of Bristow Global Media.
