Education and early life

Elva was raised in Beach Haven alongside her siblings Jeri Josephson-Riffle, David Brett Josephson, Alena Josephson and Jami Josephson-Chase, by their mother Mary Winifred Cowie and father Herbert Josephson; although Elva respects her family’s privacy and rarely talks about them in public, it’s known that her mother’s a housewife and her father a musician.

One can say that Elva was thrown into the film industry as she was only seven when cast to play Deedee Botsford in the 1980 romantic comedy movie “Hardhat and Legs”, directed by Lee Philips, and which also starred Raymond Serra, Sharon Gless and Kevin Dobson. It follows an attractive socialite who’s fallen in love with a construction worker who’s addicted to gambling.

Elva wasn’t really into acting, which led her to leave the industry in 1985 and pursue her dreams.

She studied at Red Bank Regional High School, and was into various activities while there as she took dance lessons, practiced gymnastics and played volleyball. Elva matriculated in 1991, and then enrolled at The State University of New York at Old Westbury, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in education and mathematics in 1995.

In 1984, Elva portrayed Patsy Custis in the biographical historical mini-series “George Washington”, which starred David Dukes, Patty Duke and Barry Bostwick, and follows the life of American General and first President George Washington; the mini-series was nominated for six Primetime Emmys.

Elva’s only other acting credit was playing Nancy Banks in the 1985 episode “The Day the Senior Class Got Married” of the popular adventure comedy series “CBS Schoolbreak Special”, which starred Nick Angotti, Tammy Lauren and Monica Calhoun, and follows the lives of a group of teenagers. The series aired from 1984 through 1996, and won 64 of its 198 award nominations.

Upon completing her education, Elva began teaching at Greenburg Academy in New York State, while she’s today working as a math teacher in Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
