Who is Anna Gunn?

Anna was born in Cleveland, Ohio USA, on 11 August 1968 – her zodiac sign is Leo, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress with more than 60 credits to her name, while she’s probably still known best for her portrayal of Skylar White, one of the main characters in the critically acclaimed crime thriller series “Breaking Bad”, which is rated to be amongst the best series of all time. It was created by Vince Gilligan, also starred Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, and follows a high school chemistry professor who has been diagnosed with cancer, and has now begun making and selling methamphetamines; the series aired from 2008 to 2013, and won 170 awards, including 16 Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 247 other awards.

There are rumors circulating the internet, claiming that Anna has retired from acting, however, she’s still quite active in the film industry.

Early life and education

Anna was raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico as her parents moved there not long after she was born; her father Clemens Earl Gunn Jr. was in the real estate business, while her mother Sharon Anna Kathryn ‘Shana’ Gunn (nee Peters) was an interior designer. Anna grew up being interested in various activities, and fell in love with acting while attending Santa Fe Preparatory School; she was also quite sporting during her four years there, as she enjoyed playing volleyball with her peers.

Upon matriculating in 1986, Anna enrolled at Northwestern University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in theater in 1990; in 1988, she spent half a year studying at the British American Drama Academy in London, England.

Roles in TV series

Anna made her debut TV series appearance in the 1992 episode “The Play’s the Thing – September 9 1969” of the action adventure drama “Quantum Leap”, and gained recognition in the following year, when cast to play the lead character Arden in the popular comedy “Down the Shore”, created by Alan Kirschenbaum, and which also starred Louis Mandylor and Cathryn de Prume. It tells the story of the people staying at the New Jersey Shore vacation house, also known as ‘Down the Shore’.

Some of Anna’s most notable performances in the remainder of the ‘90s were in the mystery crime drama “NYPD Blue”, the mystery crime drama “Murder One”, and the drama “Judging Amy”.

What marked the 2000s for her was perhaps her portrayal of Martha Bullock in 24 episodes of the historical crime drama “Deadwood”, created by David Milch, and which starred Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane and Molly Parker. It follows the lives of people in Deadwood, South Dakota, a city filled with crime and corruption; the series won 36 awards, including eight Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 85 other awards. In 2010, Anna made a guest appearance in the episode “Love Eternal” of the mystery crime drama “Law & Order”, and in 2014, starred as Detective Ellie Miller in all the 10 episodes of the mystery crime mini-series “Gracepoint”.

In 2017, she was cast to play Julia Ayres in the popular action crime drama “Shades of Blue”, created by Adi Hasak, and which starred Jennifer Lopez, Ray Liotta and Drea de Matteo. It follows New York City police officer Harlee Santos who has been forced to work for the FBI; it was nominated for 10 awards.

Anna’s most recent TV series role has been her portrayal of Sheriff Fern Cooley in the 2021 episode “The Last Weekend”, of the popular mystery crime drama “Prodigal Son”.

Anna made her debut film appearance in the 1992 thriller “Indecency”, while a couple of her following roles were in the short comedy “French Intensive”, the drama “Moment of Truth: Caught in the Crossfire”, and the romantic science fiction comedy “Junior”, all released in 1994.

She gained recognition in 1998, when she portrayed Emily Reynolds in the action thriller “Enemy of the State”, directed by Tony Scott, and which starred Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight.

It follows an attorney who has received evidence in the case of a politically motivated crime, and now has to hide from a corrupt politician and the NSA as they want to kill him; the movie won five of the 21 award for which it was nominated. A couple of Anna’s most notable performances in the 2000s were perhaps in the 2000 horror thriller drama “Lost Souls”, the 2001 comedy drama “Nobody’s Baby”, and the 2004 science fiction crime drama “NYPD  2069”. The year 2012 saw her star as June Pruitt in the comedy drama “Sassy Pants”, written and directed by Coley Sohn, and which starred Ashley Rickards and Martin Spanjers.

It follows a home-schooled teenager who has run away from her mother, and moved in with her gay father; the movie was nominated for three awards. A couple of Anna’s most recent roles have been in the 2018 comedy “Being Frank”, the 2019 western drama “Deadwood: The Movie”, and the 2021 comedy “Land of Dreams”.

She exchanged vows with Scottish real estate broker and actor Alastair Duncan in 1990, in a private ceremony attended by only the closest of their friends and family members; Anna gave birth to their first daughter Emma Duncan in 2001, and their second  daughter Eila Rose Duncan followed on 12 September 2006, but Anna and Alastair divorced in 2009 for unknown reasons.

Anna hasn’t spoken of any men whom she’s perhaps been with since her divorce from Alastair, and as of June 2022, she seems to be single, was married to Alastair Duncan, and has two daughters with him.

Hobbies and other interests

Anna was physically quite active in her 20s, 30s and 40s, as it was important for her acting career to stay fit; she had multiple training sessions at the gym every week, and also followed a strict diet. She works out less nowadays, she still goes to the gym once a week. Anna’s a huge lover of animals, with dogs and horses being her favorites, and has had a couple of pet dogs.

Travelling is perhaps one of her main hobbies – her career has taken her to various US states, as well as to several Asian and European countries, while her dream travel destination seems to be Melbourne, Australia. Anna has her own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Johnny Depp, Bryan Cranston and Emma Watson, while a couple of her favorite movies include “Edward Scissorhands”, “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and the franchise “Harry Potter”.
