Born Carlos Armando Ponce Freyre Jr. on 4 September 1972 in Santurce, Puerto Rico, he’s the son of Carlos Ponce Sr. and Esther Freyre. His parents are Cuban emigrants who escaped from Cuba following the Cuban Revolution under Fidel Castro.

Raised in Humacao, he featured in school plays during his childhood years, and while at home he would also showcase his singing talents. He began appearing in TV commercials at the age of six, and in high school, he was a part of the school’s drama club.

The Ponce family moved to Miami, Florida USA in 1986, and during his days at South Miami Senior High, he continued to act in school plays and received the best student actor of the southern region of the United States honors.

He received a scholarship for the New World School after successfully competing in the Southeastern Theatre Conference, however, Univision, a Spanish-language television station, gave him his own show “Hablando”, so he gave up on his studies, and focused on his television debut.


After the show ended, Carlos moved to Mexico where he won the role of Willie in the soap opera “Guadalupe”, after a visit to the Televisa studio. His next role was as Renato in the soap opera “Sentimientos Ajenos”, appearing in all but two episodes of the highly acclaimed series, co-starring Chantal Andere, Yolanda Andrade, and Olivia Bucio.

Ponce continued his career with roles in soap operas including “Blameless Love” (2001), then “Angel de la Guarda, Mi Dulce Compania” (2003), while in 2005 he was Rodrigo in the comedy film “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo”. Since then, Carlos has continued to feature in both Mexican and American productions, appearing in both films and TV series.


Before the 2000s ended, Carlos was Luis in the film “Meet Me in Miami”, and played Steve in the film “Compete Guide to Guys” both in 2005, while in 2006 he was Antonio in the film “Just My Luck”. In 2007 he starred as Bruce Remington in the soap opera “Dame Chocolate”, alongside Genesis Rodriguez, and in 2009 portrayed Salvadore in the film “Couples Retreat”.

He started the new decade with the role of Antonio ‘El Perro’ Brando in the soap opera “Perro Amor”, and from 2011 to 2012 starred in the double role Santiago Ballesteros Ortiz/ Jesus in the soap opera “Dos Hogares”.


His next prominent role was as Humberto Cano in the soap opera “Santa Diabla” (2013-2014), while in the 2015 comedy film “Spy”, Carlos portrayed the character Mathew Wright. Written and directed by Paul Feig, and starring Melissa McCarthy, Rose Bryne, and Jude Law, the film won several prestigious awards.

Carlos played Benjamin Pacheco in seven episodes of the award-winning mystery comedy-drama series “Devious Maids” in 2016, and the same year started playing Manuel Gallardo in the TV series “Silvana Sin Lana”.

To speak further of his accomplishments, in 2019 Ponce portrayed Jorge Jaramillo in the TV series “Playing with Fire”, while in 2020 he was Leon Contreras in the soap opera “La Dona” (2020). His recent projects include the role of Armando in the TV series “Loli’s Luck” (2021) and the part of Paul in the television movie “The Housewives of the North Pole” (2021).

Carlos is also an accomplished singer – his first album “Carlos Ponce” came out in 1998, and spawned several hits, including “Rezo” and “Decir Adios”.


Since then, Carlos has released six more albums, including “Todo Lo Que Soy”, “La Historia” (2003), “Perro Amor” (2010), and “Me Llevas” (2012), and some of the hits from these albums include “Te Vas”, “Escuchame”, “La Razon de mi Ser”, and “Mujer con Pantalones”, among others.

Following his divorce from Veronica, he started dating Columbian actress Ximena Duque, a romance which lasted from 2010 to 2016. Two years later, he started a relationship with Mexican TV host Karina Banda, and the two married in 2020.
