Tyler’s childhood wasn’t one from the books; his parents were separated and he grew up in Lima, Ohio with his mother and younger brother, and later moved to Matteson, Illinois. There, he went to Marian Catholic High School for which he played basketball, however, he was fairly small with 1.60m until his senior year when he grew to 1.73m, and was chosen for the McDonald’s All-American game, but was still overlooked by the major basketball universities, however, thanks to his major game improvements, Tyler was recruited by Kentucky and spent his college years playing for the Wildcats.

Before the start of 2017-2018 season, Tyler underwent ankle surgery performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which caused him to miss the NBA Summer League, but he managed to recover for the start of the regular season. His first start was against the Minnesota Timberwolves on the 11th November. Though he went 1-5 from the field, his team won and he had five assists with two steals and three rebounds.
