A native of Philadelphia, Malik went to the same school that former 13-time All-Star Wilt Chamberlain attended, Overbrook High School where he started playing basketball. After matriculation, he enrolled at Drexel University, where he continued his sports career. He was rather successful while at the university since he was the star on his team and led the Drexel Dragons to the NCAA Tournament victory against the University of Memphis. Their win was regarded as an upset, and is to date the only title for Drexel.
Malik received All-American honors for his contribution, while he was also named America East Player of the Year twice, in 1995 and 1996.
After graduating in 1996, Malik declared for the 1996 NBA Draft, and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets as the 44th overall pick, which marked the start of his professional career and his net worth. Unfortunately, after only one season he became a free agent. However, that turned out to be great for young Malik, since the San Antonio Spurs signed him and he stayed with the Spurs until 2005, during which time Malik’s salary grew from $272,250 to $5.5 million, which increased his net worth significantly. Also, he and the Spurs were champions in 1999.
In 2005 he was traded to the New York Knicks with draft picks, in exchange for Nazr Mohammed and Jamison Brewer. However, his already low numbers began to decline further, and after his playing time dropped to 10 minutes per game, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunders. Unfortunately, after only 20 games for his new team, Malik was released by the club.
Malik finished his career with 5,003 points, 3,371 rebounds, and 684 assists. His jersey No. 00 was retired by Drexel University.

After his stint ended, he was hired as a color analyst for the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League, then taking a step forward in 2011, Malik became a color commentator for the Philadelphia 76ers, and held the job until 2015, further increasing his wealth.
