Career

With Aaliyah’s music career on the rise, Rashad was close to her, and featured in several of her music videos, including “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number”, “4 Page Letter”, “If Your Girl Only Knew”, and “Hot Like Fire”. He even wrote the synopsis for the music video “4 Page Letter”, which took him under two hours, while still at university.

In 2000, Rashad directed the film “The Mim Rose”, with Aaliyah as its main star in the role of Melissa. Two years later, the “Queen of the Damned” film was released, with Aaliyah in the lead role, but since Aaliyah had already passed away, Rashad re-dubbed several of his sister’s lines to complete the film in post-production.

His first solo effort was the short film “Crystalis”, a modern-day homage to “La Belle et La Bete (Beauty and the Beast)”. He wrote and directed the film, which follows a mystically deformed artist and his battle with emotions such as love, fear, etc. The film received high praise, encouraging Rashad to continue making more films.

Since 2015, he has been more focused on preserving Aaliyah’s legacy, and has no new projects on which he works other than Aaliyah’s Estate company.

Her uncle, Barry Hankerson, was an entertainment lawyer and Gladys Knight’s husband. Gladys, an established singer and actress, took Aaliyah under her wing, traveling with her through the US and appearing in various commercials and television programs. At ten years old, Aaliyah was featured in the “Star Search” show. Barry Hankerson struck a deal with Jive Records, and Aaliyah was signed to his Background Records when she was just 12 years old.

R. Kelly became her mentor and helped her write and produce her debut album – “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number” – released when she was just 14 years old. The album landed at the No. 18 on Billboard 200 chart, and achieved platinum status, spawning such hits as “Back & Forth”, “At Your Best (You Are Love), and “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number”.

Upon the album’s release, rumors of her illegal romance with R. Kelly began circulating, even that the two were secretly married. The marriage was annulled in February 1995 by her parents, but she would only claim that the two were rather close, and that there was nothing sexual going on between them.

However, Demetrius Smith Sr., who was R. Kelly’s tour manager, claimed in his 2011 book “The Man Behind the Man: Looking from the Inside Out”, that Kelly and Aaliyah married when he told him that she was pregnant. Moreover, in the documentary “Surviving R. Kelly”, Smith said that he helped the duo forge Aaliyah’s documents to claim she was 18 years old at the time of marriage.

It topped the US Billboard 200 chart, and sold over 13 million copies worldwide.

Aaliyah died on 25 August 2001 at 22 years old, in a plane crash she chartered to Miami from Abaco Islands, the Bahamas. An investigation following the accident was launched, which determined that the airplane was overloaded and that the pilot had traces of alcohol and cocaine in his bloodstream.

At the time of her death, Aaliyah’s net worth was estimated at over $8 million.
