Born as Frederick Karl Pruetzel on 22 June 1954, in New York City, USA, he was the son of a German father, Edward Karl Pruetzel, and his wife, Maria de Gracia, a Puerto Rican. He had problems with being overweight during his early life, so his mother enrolled him into ballet lessons, thinking it would benefit his overall health. He fell in love with the stage and performing arts on the whole, and later enrolled at the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts.

He continued with ballet lessons in the school, but also discovered a gift for comedy, and left his studies to focused on becoming a stand-up comedian.

Although short, he had a rather distinguished career. He started by performing at several comedy clubs in New York City, such as Catch a Rising Star and The Improv. He legally changed his name to Prinze, and after making an on-screen debut in one of the last episodes of “Jack Paar Tonite”, he made his breakthrough with an appearance in the popular “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”.

After this, he got his own series “Chico and the Man”, co-starring Jack Albertson, portraying Francisco ‘Chico’ Rodriguez in 62 episodes of the highly-acclaimed show, before his untimely death.

Freddie was a star, but he struggled with depression for the better part of his adult life, and on 28 January 1977 he shot himself, and was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center. He was placed into a medically induced coma after emergency surgery, but once the family decided to remove the life support system, Freddie was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. on January 29.

The night he died, Freddie called his friends and family members saying goodbyes to them, but none of them took him seriously, although he even left a note stating that he had decided to take his life.

His death was ruled a suicide, but after a civil case was filed in 1983 by his ex-wife, mother, and son against Crown Life Insurance Company, his death was then claimed to be medication-induced and accidental.

This granted the family an additional $200,000 in life insurance, and with his psychiatrist and doctor a $1 million out-of-court settlement to end their malpractice suit for allowing him access to a gun, and over-prescribing him Quaaludes.
