She portrayed various characters in three episodes of the ABC fantasy drama series “Fantasy Island” from 1978 to 1983, and landed the role of Nancy Wilks in the short-lived ABC children’s comedy-drama series “Friends” in 1979, co-starring Charlie Aiken, Jarrod Johnson and Janet MacLachlan.

Her next major role came the following year, when she played heart patient Lisa Davis in the cult parody film “Airplane!”, directed by Jim Abrahams and the brothers Jerry and David Zucker, also starring Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Leslie Nielsen. The film was both a critical and commercial success, since it grossed more than $171 million on a $3.5 million budget. It received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Screenplay, and for her performance, Jill received a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Young Comedian.

Other Projects

After “The Love Boat” was ended, Jill became more focused on other things, since she relocated to New York City after landing the job of an event produced at Madison Square Garden.

Jill then took a break from acting from 1990 to 1997, when she returned as Karby Stalter in an episode of the Daytime Emmy Award-winning CBS soap opera “The Young nd The Restless”. In 2008, Jill Whelan made her New York City cabaret debut with her own one-woman show, entitled “Jill Whelan: An Evening In Dry Dock”, after which she returned to acting with the role of Sally Jones in the 2009 short comedy film “Looking For”.
