Born Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver on the 30th November 1981 in Simi Valley, California USA, he is a former mixed martial artist and adult film actor, best known to the world for competing in the welterweight division for such promotions as The Ultimate Fighter, Bellator and XFC, among other.

He is of mixed ancestry; his father is German-American and his mother is Mexican. He has a younger sister and brother. He had a tough childhood, as his mother was a drug addict and he would often take care of his younger siblings. Furthermore, his father died in front of his eyes; Jonathan tried to bring him back to life with CPR but he was unsuccessful.

He received his education at The Citadel in Charleston, South California for two years, as he was expelled from high school,because of his poor behavior. Nevertheless, he majored in biology.
His fight career started in the mid- 2000’s against Angel Santibanez at the Total Combat 2 event; he defeated Angel by TKO in the first round. He fought in two more Total Combat events, defeating Frank Duffy and Andrew Ramirez.

He then signed up for the Ultimate Fighter Season Six, and although not selected forthe best 16, but still managed to get into selection after Roman Mitichyan broke his elbow, and Jonathan was the next in line as his replacement.

He had problems with TNA Wrestling, and legally changed his name to War Machine. He made his debut under UFC in 2007, defeating Jared Rollins in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs Team Serra Finale. His next fight was against Yoshiyuki Yoshida at the UFC 84, which he lost by submission in the first round. He was released by the UFC after he rejected to fight and due to his comments about UFC fighter Evan Tanner’s death, commenting that Tanner’s death was suicide, inspired by the end of Tanner’s career. After that, he signed with the Bellator Fighting Championships, but soon his contract was terminated due to his comments about Barack Obama.

His next stop was Independent Promotions, in which he fought against such fighters as Mikey Gomez, whom he defeated and David Mitchel, against whom he lost by split decision. Also, he defeated Zach Light at the BAMMA 3 event and also won against Roger Huerta at the UWF 1: Huerta vs. War Machine event.

In 2013 he returned to Bellator and fought against Blas Avena, who he defeated in the first round. He continued to fight in Bellator events throughout 2013, defeating Vaughn Anderson, and losing to Ron Keslar, which was his last MMA match, before his release from Bellator due to allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Christy Mack.

Apart from his career as a mixed martial artist, War Machine also tried himself in the adult film industry, and had appeared in 12 adult films, which also improved his wealth.

Regarding his personal life, War Machine was in a relationship with pornographic actress Christy Mack, and is now in prison, charged with assaulting her, and Corey Thomas. His trial has been postponed several times since 2015, and officially started in February 2017. While in prison, he allegedly tried to kill himself, however, he was saved by the corrections officer during routine cells check.
